Detective Mike Sterling walked away from his dream job telling himself it was to honor the promise he’d made his mother, while lying in a Chicago emergency room. A year later, he’s still fighting the demons that followed him back to his boyhood town.

Taryn Watts is an award-winning designer, going from project to project, living from a suitcase. Her plan for Renlend Kansas was the same as always. Go in, get the job done and get out, just the way she likes it. Growing up as a cop’s daughter, her every move was controlled. When she escaped to college she vowed to never fall in love with a cop –ever. Until she found herself sitting across from the ruggedly handsome stranger. Looking into Mike’s ice blue eyes they pulled her, called to her, but there was a haunting in them she knew too well.

Mike is drawn to Taryn, her passion for her work and her stunning beauty left him breathless, but what surprises him most is the peace he feels when he’s near her. Maybe it’s because Taryn is a temporary addition to his town and his secret is safe, or maybe it’s because she makes him feel safe. Mike knows he can’t keep up this charade and when Taryn moves to Renlend for an extended stay he can’t hide the truth any longer.

Can Taryn forget he’s a cop and give him her heart, or will his demons drive them apart?

I received an ARC for an honest review from Literati Author Services.

This was my first time reading a book from Amy Gregory and the cover kind of threw me as to what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised how good this book really was. With lines like...

" Eh…I'd apologize, sweetheart, but you're beautiful."

Mike has been a big city detective and comes back to his hometown after promising his mother. Mike meets Taryn at his local watering hole one night and is instantly drawn to her. Taryn is only in town on business and not looking for a guy let alone a cop. But from the first time they meet you can't deny the connection.

" If you stand there and have an orgasm over an old building, I am seriously going to have Mike haul you to the loony bin where you can see 'fashion' up close and personal."

Mike is the perfect book boyfriend, so if you've been in search for a new one…he's your guy. Mike's brother and sister-in-law are hilarious and so cute! Taryn's co-worker and gay best friend and his partner are so supportive and sweet!

Absolutely loved this and would recommend to anyone look for a sweet romance novel!

Excerpt #1:

“Mike?”

He reached for the bottle, the dark glass still cold to the touch. Tipping it back for a long swallow, the slight burn of the heavy ale helped force his past back where it belonged.

“Hey, Mike?”

Noises became sharper around him as he realized it wasn’t Molly’s voice calling his name this time. Silverware sliding across a plate and ice cubes falling into a glass were a far cry from an emergency room, especially when a round of cheers rose up around him. One glance was enough to know the baseball game he had zoned out on was now tied. Blinking, he separated his hellish past from present day and turned toward the bar to answer Jeff.

His friend was holding up a fresh bottle, yet to be uncapped. Mike blinked twice, hardly letting Jeff’s chuckle register.

Mike’s jaw wasn’t the only part of him to twitch.

It had nothing to do with the second beer the bartender just set on the counter for the waitress to deliver to him. No, it was all to do with the knockout in a black pencil skirt, toned bare legs and killer heels standing at the bar—talking to Jeff.

Excerpt #2:

“You know, with you sitting there in my shirt like that, all bedroom eyes and sex kittenish…it’s very likely this kitchen table is going to be used for more than just eating in about five minutes.”

She bit her lip and propped her bare foot up on the seat of the chair. With only two buttons done, her new position left very little to the imagination. She tried to hide her smirk behind her coffee mug, but it crinkled the corners of her eyes.

“Hmm. Might be kind of cold, don’t you think?”

“I won’t be the one on bottom, sugar.” He winked back.

Taryn inhaled sharply as her eyes went wide momentarily. Understanding dawned. Easing her hands away from her face, she lowered the mug to the table. He could see the wheels turning, so he waited. Pushing off the table she started out of the room.

Mike was quicker.

He had her pinned underneath him on the kitchen floor before she’d known what hit her. Mike had to give her a couple of points for effort. However, now she was laughing uncontrollably, and the more she squirmed and wiggled, the better shots he got of her body from the shirt hanging off of her.

Giving her a quick kiss on the lips, he pulled her back up. “You should know better than to run. I’ll always catch you.”

“Maybe I wanted to get caught?”

“Go with that…it almost sounds believable.” He chuckled and pulled her down with him as he sat back in his chair. Her bare ass was hot enough to sear him through his gym shorts. “Admit it. I’m faster than you thought I was.”

“Nope.”

“Nope, what? I’m not faster, or you’re not going to admit it?”

“Neither.”

She was fighting laughter and losing the iron grip she had on it.

“Girl…you’re about to get laid out on this table just so I can prove my point.”

“Prove it, big shot.”

In one swoop, Mike had her flat on her back on the kitchen table, their small breakfast mess out of reach. The laughter danced in her eyes, but it was mixed with fire, surprise, and desire. She was breathing hard—but remained quiet. Her teasing taunts stilled for the time being. Mike took the sides of her shirt…his shirt, and ripped. The buttons flew. One hit the refrigerator, the other hit the wall. Her eyes flew open, full of shock, but also need.

Oh yeah, Mike thought, she’d never had anyone take her like she was needed before. There was a hint of gratefulness tugging at her mouth, before her lips parted and her tongue darted out to lick her lower lip.

When asked ‘when do you have time to write’, Amy Gregory simply laughs. The real answer is, “in bits and pieces”. She and her husband live in Kansas City with their three fantastic kids that keep them running in three very different directions. Because she sits so much, she always carries a notebook with her at all times.

She has an off the wall, snarky, off the cuff sense of humor that often shocks even those who’ve known her for years. And she loves that her children have all been blessed that ability to make others laugh as well. At least she’s grateful most of the time! Her husband often teases her about how she “makes this stuff up” when he’s reading a piece of her work. … The answer—“it just comes to me when I’m typing”. Scary thought, huh!
